Fed Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The United States central bank lowered interest rates on midweek, marking the second reduction in the current year during financial volatility originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has risen and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve typically analyzes labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, including the number of new jobs created to the market and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of jobs created to the market in the summer month was down by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.

Private Data Show Continued Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to release September’s job market report in early October, it halted its release once the shutdown started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the business segment cut 32,000 positions in last month, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said recently, a trend he had earlier attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the agency still issued its price statistics for September that showed that prices are going up, albeit slowly. Prices increased 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target price increase is 2%.
