2K Hires Popular Battle Royale Producer to Rescue Troubled Hero Shooter Project Ethos

2K Games has welcomed a seasoned producer from the creators of Apex Legends to lead the development team at their internal studio, which is currently working on the upcoming over-the-shoulder roguelike extraction-shooter known as Project Ethos.

Management Shift Follows Poor Reception

Brinkman assumes the role of studio head at the development studio following the departure of former leader the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was removed from his post due to Project Ethos' lackluster unveiling last fall.

Recently, 2K president David Ismailer updated staff about this organizational change through an official communication, which stressed that playtesting had shown the requirement for a more defined game identity.

The president expressed that the developers is now overhauling the project with a renewed approach, aiming to better meet player expectations.

A Pattern of Strategic Acquisitions

The news mirrors a similar step taken by 2K Games in August, when they recruited Rod Fergusson from Blizzard to assist with the beloved franchise studio Cloud Chamber.

Below is the entire message from the president's announcement:

Team—

I know you all just wrapped up your gathering - I trust you’re as excited as I am with the recent updates. Previously I sent you all a update, I mentioned the following: “I believe in this team. You all are some of the most dedicated and creative creators we have had the pleasure to work with - and we’re excited for that partnership to endure.”

Given your hard work and flexibility, particularly over the past twelve months, you consistently demonstrate that.

The community feedback from last autumn’s the game playtest was enlightening. It affirmed the promise of a roguelike shooter but made clear we still had refinements needed. It highlighted the need for a clearer brand.

The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve advanced. You took the criticism to consideration and reimagined the title with a revitalized direction - one that’s poised to achieve its potential to our fans.

Our confidence in Project ETHOS increases every day. To advance the remarkable advancement you’ve made, I’m excited to announce Ben Brinkman as the latest Studio Head of 31st Union. After a period of discussions, Ben comes aboard us on next week.

Ben’s leadership and experience in the PVP shooter space is vast, having spent the recent years creating and managing some of the most recognizable series in the industry, such as the acclaimed shooter, and lately, the battle royale hit.

I invite you all in receiving him soon. We are all looking forward to continue seeing the development of the game in the months to ahead.

David

"Face the opponents with fresh skills, stakes, and challenges that shift every session. Will you safely extract with your collected items? The game has not yet received an confirmed debut schedule or platforms, but enthusiasts can expect additional details as development advances.
